My 7 year old son has speech articulation problems with sounds that should be developed according to charts I've seen online. His teacher says she can understand him and his speech is not affected enough to receive therapy at school. Is there anything I can way I can get him speech help at school? I'm afraid he'll be teased or misunderstood by peers.

I think his friends have a lot of trouble understanding him. I think the teacher does too. I will ask for an assessment.
A child is eligible for speech services relating to an articulation disorder if the child demonstrates difficulty using spoken language to an extent that it adversely affects his or her educational performance, and such difficulty cannot be corrected without special education services. Generally, this means that the child's production of speech significantly interferes with communication and attracts adverse attention.
The best way to determine if your son qualifies for speech therapy is to write to your district's special education office and request a speech-language assessment. Although your child's teacher is familiar with his speech, the speech therapist is the most qualified professional to decide if your son is eligible for service.
